For those of us who grew up with Circa Survive, their music was more than sound. It was a sanctuary. From the moment Juturna washed over the underground scene in 2005 through the luminous chaos of Blue Sky Noise and the introspective calm of The Amulet, Circa built a language that spoke to the restless, the reflective, and the spiritually curious.

If you’ve wondered where they’ve been lately, you’re not alone. The truth is that Circa Survive quietly stepped away.

The Hiatus

In late 2022, after releasing the two-part EPs A Dream About Love and A Dream About Death—later combined into the full-length Two Dreams—the band announced that they were no longer treating Circa as a full-time project. There was no big farewell tour or breakup statement. They simply took a breath and stepped back.

Anthony Green later confirmed in passing online that the hiatus was real. Still, it never felt final. Circa’s story has always been cyclical. They’ve paused before, regrouped, and returned with something completely new.

Anthony has kept creating and performing. His solo albums continue to explore vulnerability and recovery in a way that only he can. His new band, LS Dunes, with members of Coheed and Cambria and My Chemical Romance, has taken off in its own right. It’s heavier and more urgent but still carries that same emotional pulse that defined Circa’s best moments.

Colin, Brendan, Steve, and Nick

Guitarist Colin Frangicetto has been active with his solo project Psychic Babble, blending dreamy textures with gentle electronics. He’s also stayed connected to the visual side of the band’s identity through collaborations with longtime Circa artist Esao Andrews.

Bassist Nick Beard and drummer Steve Clifford have both kept busy with session work and side projects, staying true to their creative roots while exploring new directions. Brendan Ekstrom continues to balance music and family life, keeping close ties with the bandmates who became brothers.

The Legacy

Circa Survive’s music still feels timeless. It lives on in the playlists of people who found comfort in their sound and in the art of Esao Andrews, whose surreal imagery became inseparable from the music. Every generation finds them again, usually through a lyric or a moment that cuts through the noise.

For those of us who saw them live—at Starland Ballroom, The Stone Pony, or even halfway across the Pacific—it’s impossible to forget that feeling. Circa wasn’t just a band you listened to. They were a band you felt in your chest.

They may be quiet now, but the echo they left behind is louder than ever.
